Waterloo Open/Injury Update

Hey all,

I just wanted to give a quick update on what’s been going on this summer for me as I have had several people reach out and ask me why I haven’t been playing many events or traveling as much as I had initially planned.  Unfortunately, shortly after U.S. Open local qualifying in May, I broke my middle left finger on a tree root while playing a practice round in Midland.  The break was very minor, and was basically a chip fracture at the tip of the middle phalanx (top knuckle).  I was told to let it rest for 4 weeks before practicing, and it should heal on its own.  I started practicing again in the middle of June, and after a few rusty weeks I was starting to play good  golf heading into my first event since being injured at the Waterloo Open in Iowa.

The tournament itself did not go as I had hoped, and I definitely was rusty in a competitive sense.  I grinded out a 2 under par 70 in the first round in windy conditions, and was sitting one outside the cut line heading into the second round.  In the second round I could not get anything going, and on hole fifteen I hit my tee shot under a tree right of the fairway.  I tried to punch out to the green, and my club hit a tree root that I did not know was there,  and I immediately knew I broke my finger again.  I finished out the round and ironically birdied two of my last three holes (I should have broken it earlier apparently), and headed to an urgent care to get X-rays done.  Sure enough, I re-broke the same finger but significantly worse this and will have to miss the rest of my summer schedule.  I am scheduled to see a hand surgeon next week to determine the best action to prevent this from happening again.

I’m definitely frustrated as I had started to play some really good golf heading into last week and was very excited to give Korn Ferry Q School my first try.  Despite this I plan on being as productive as possible in my recovery time, and I am excited to begin teaching and giving lessons in Midland as well as working on my fitness and nutrition.

As always, thank you for the support.
